Being in Control

Book Review by Mike Legg, Editor
I have just finished a very enjoyable reading of Jason Alster’s book “Being in Control”. As a neurophysiologist, (he wanted to take Ritalin out of the ADD equation) he shows us how we can help ADD/ADHD and Dyslexic children use natural techniques to increase potential, creativity and success in school, while at the same time helping learning and concentration.
A stated aim in the introduction is “ to help children overcome learning problems, to be more relaxed so that they may sit quietly to do homework and improve their concentration. Tools for helping children be more creative as well as socialize better with other children are also included.”

The book is neatly divided into 4 sections.

  • Part One describes the possible problems faced by the child
  • Part Two is a self-help guide
  • Part Three has tips and tools to make and use
  • Part Four concludes with various methods of success in school.
  The whole book is presented in a specific order and suggests each page therefore, is practiced in sequence. Some of the important topics covered include;
  • Positive Affirmations,
  • My Sense of Time,
  • Argument Resolution,
  • Room Tidying,
  • Handwriting,
  • Relaxation Techniques,
  • Maths and Problem Solving Techniques
  • and How to Pass Exams.
How important are these? Jason puts the fun element back into these major problem areas for these children.

Finally, the inside back cover provides the reader with a  Diploma to fill in,rounding off the whole programme with a good dose of Positive Reinforcement, so important to these children!
I especially enjoyed the wonderful graphics and photos used, they were fun, bright, meaningful and aimed sensitively at youngsters. They couldn’t fail to enjoy and relate to them, and to me this is  a strength of this book. Children will immediately feel at home in the text, ideas and situations portrayed.
I can’t recommend this book highly enough and just wish that I had had it available to me as a classroom teacher years ago, struggling to understand and help these children.
Well done, Jason, and thank you!
